Happy Birthday Alyssa!

Today is the birthday of our firstborn child, long awaited baby, the delight of our life, Alyssa Erin Dianne Chomick Yuhas.

It seems we waited for you a long time, Alyssa, and the wait made your arrival all the more sweet.  You have charmed us since the day you arrived. As the first born in the family, everything you’ve done has been new and exciting. Your first steps, your first words, your first day of school, your first sleepover, your first date, your first day of college …

We have watched you develop from a baby to an accomplished woman. It seems that anything you try to do, you do well. You were an amazing piano player (and why aren’t you playing anymore?), a fabulous swimmer, gave us so much pleasure watching you play basketball and then you turned to art and design and excelled in that area too! I am astounded each time I see anything you create (especially your magazine!) and love checking out your latest interests and ideas on your blog. You are beautiful, poised, accomplished, articulate, … where did you come from!?

You married the perfect partner for you – creative, supportive, steadfast Shane. He is the anchor that will keep you safe as you soar through life.

This year is going to be full of excitement and change. We’re so very proud of how you are following God’s call on your heart and can hardly wait to see where that is going to take you.

Happy Birthday Alyssa!

A sad tale

I ordered a new washer and freezer through Home Depot. Delivery was scheduled for Wednesday, January 11th. I took the day off and called first thing in the morning to confirm the delivery time. And that’s when I found out that they’d entered our phone number into their system in correctly, couldn’t get ahold of us to schedule the delivery, so they’d CANCELLED the order. The number they had in their system started with 503 instead of 403. The area code was wrong. To say I was frustrated is putting it mildly. I told the girl how ridiculous it was, and asked why they couldn’t figure out the area code. I live in ALBERTA which only has two area codes! To which she replied “I’m in Montreal”. Which I guess means they can’t figure out anything beyond their own backyard. And then she asked, did I want to re-order. Well, OF COURSE I didn’t want to reorder from them but on the other hand, I had done my research, knew what I wanted and they had the best prices so I ended up caving. And then, not surprisingly, her computer froze up and she passed me off to a colleague.

Gentleman number 2 was pleasant and since I’d already vented I was able to be a bit more civil with him. I was also beginning to feel a bit guilty about my behaviour. Even though THEY didn’t know I’m a Christian, I know I am (and of course, God knows everything) so I figured I better start acting like it. It took forever to complete the order and at one point the guy thanked me for my patience. I was feeling pretty convicted by that point and apologized for being a little testy with them. Apparently, compared to other callers, I was being patient! It was a long, long process but by the end of it I once again had a washer and freezer ordered with delivery now scheduled for FEBRUARY 11th. They matched the original price (appliances had been on sale) and waived the delivery fee. Woo hoo.

So, good news, I’m getting my appliances. Bad news, on Saturday my washer, which has been on it’s last legs, died. It’s done, finished, kaput. And my new washer doesn’t come for four weeks. Good news, I had wondered if I was ordering the washer too soon ... I hated to get a new one if the old one still had months left to go ... but it looks like I’m not too soon. Bad news, I don’t know if I have enough socks and underwear to last four weeks!
